Richard was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran and had served on the USS Whetstone, USS Ozbourn, USS Collett and the USS Loyd Thomas. He had received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. Richard truly enjoyed the outdoors especially deer and duck hunting. He also enjoyed quiet times carving and painting his birds and duck decoys. He was often the center of attention at the craft shows he attended with Marcia, he was her mobile display, walking around the show with her hats. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Aurile Johnson and 3 brothers Fred, Bert and Louie Charon.
