Richard Joseph Buechner was born in the Bronx (New York) September 13, 1929. He was the youngest of five brothers. The Buechner family had at that time a bungalow in a beach area on Staten Island. They converted it into a two story house and moved there permanently in the 1930s. Richard attended Tottenville High School, then went to Wagner College for a BA in chemistry. He obtained an MA in chemistry at Columbia University. He was called into military service in the 1950s and served at a military base in Germany. He returned to the States and began work as a research chemist at various corporations in private industry. At one point he was working in Germany and met his wife, Ingrid Stierhofer, there. They were married in the mid-1960s. He worked at several places in the United States, though primarily in California. He also spent several years at a company in Japan. In retirement he moved to Arizona. He and Ingrid lived there until Richard developed a neurological condition that made walking progressively more difficult. They eventually moved into a small nursing home in Prescott, Arizona. Ingrid succumbed to Covid in March, 2021. Richard passed on September 25th, 2023. He leaves behind a granddaughter Alexandra Desailly, a daughter-in-law Rachel Mallicote Hudson, and six nephews and nieces—Jeff Buechner, Philip Buechner, Robert Buechner, Edith Buechner, Barbara Perez and Paula Meehan as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews.
