May Westfall Furlong

May Westfall Furlong was born in Phoenix on June 6, 1930. She passed away on January 22, 2013 in Prescott Valley. May grew up in Phoenix and Scottsdale. She graduated from Scottsdale High School in 1948 and from Arizona State College at Tempe in 1952. May then served a four year mission for the Methodist Church in Japan during the first decade following the end of World War II. She returned to teach at Kyrene School. She and Ben Furlong were married in 1959. During her entire life May devoted herself to the service of others. She started a pre-school in central Mesa in the late 1960s and another in Casa Grande. The projects were staffed entirely by volunteers. May later taught first grade in the Wilson School District near Sky Harbor. Her commitment was always to the “least of these.” May read extensively the works of many civil rights workers of the 60s and 70s. May was also deeply devoted to women’s rights. She never lost her drive and commitment to causes that she took unto herself. May was devoted to her family; indeed her first love. She was predeceased by her parents, Merrill and Nellie Westfall and her beloved son, Eric. She is survived by her husband, Ben; her children Cynthia Scanlon and Jon and Donna Furlong. She devoted much of her life to her four grandchildren-Caitee, Britney, Jim and Hayley. She is also survived by her great grandson, Alexander and her sisters, Betty Westfall and Barbara Powell.
