Martha Jean Cvetkovich

Martha Jean (Smock) Cvetkovich, 93, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2021, at her care facility after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.Martha Jean was born November 23, 1927, in Oakland, CA and came to Prescott with her parents Charles and Mary Smock at the age of nine months.  She felt privileged to grow up here in Prescott and enjoyed her childhood and educational experiences.“MJ”, as she was affectionately called, was a member of the PHS choir and numerous clubs at the time.  She was the 1946 Homecoming Queen.  After graduation, she attended NAU.Martha Jean then began her career as a bookkeeper for the Yavapai County Schools, a job in which she held for forty years!   She enjoyed and appreciated all the employees and superintendents that she worked with throughout the county. She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church.  She married Frank Cvetkovich in the old Catholic Church in downtown Prescott on Marina Street.  They were married until his passing in 2011.She was a founding member of the Claret Club of Sacred Heart.  She was also a three-term member of the school board and actively involved with the Parish Council over the years. One of her favorite days of the week was Saturday when she was a greeter for the Vigil Mass.  Later, she felt her greatest accomplishment was being a part of the building committee for the new church on Fleury Ave in 1969.In addition to church involvement, she was active in her Sorority, The Epsilon Sigma Alpha Theta Chapter #330 during the 1960’s.Martha Jean also loved reading and writing and was contacted by “Cappy Bozarth” to type the first edition of the Cowbelles, “Tales of Old Yavapai”.  This was something she was proud of.After she retired, she loved traveling to various islands including Hawaii and also abroad with her good friend and classmate, Norma Orr.She also enjoyed playing bridge on Thursdays with her lady friends.“MJ” was definitely the heart and soul of her family.  She was a devoted mother to her daughters Kim and Lynn.  She also spent countless hours doing the bookkeeping for Frank’s business. She and Jane Robbins also helped identify Prescott people and answering questions about local events when called upon by the Sharlot Hall Museum. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Smock; her husband, Frank; and her brother Charley. She is survived by her daughters Kim of Flagstaff and Lynn of Prescott. We would like to recognize Christina de Carlo, her devoted caregiver, for all her support before the pandemic in March 2020.In lieu of flowers, the girls request memorials in her name be made, in the following order, to the Prescott High School Half-Century Club Scholarship Fund, The Sharlot Hall Museum Education Center or The Sacred Heart School.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church 150 Fleury St, Prescott, AZ 86301.Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Homes.  Please log on to www.ruffnerwakelin.com to sign MJ’s guestbook and share a memory with the family.
