Lloyd Eugene Self lost his long battle with cancer Monday July 21, 2014; he was a strong and determined man. He was born October 9th 1935 in Phoenix to Clarence and Rose (Williams) Self. He started his young life working as an iceman for Crystal Ice before joining the Navy in 1955 during the Korean conflict. Shortly after joining, he married his childhood sweetheart Melva Jean Jones; they had five children, four of which were born four years in a row after their marriage. After his discharge from the Navy, he went back to being an iceman. His mother Rose had bought him a guitar while recovering from a broken arm while just a child, which started a long life career of honing his skills and eventually becoming one of the most prolific musicians and entertainer of our time. In the late 60's, besides always playing music he became a very popular disc jockey on the radio station KHAT. But, never did he love anything more than playing his guitar and being the leader of many country and western bands. He also drove trucks, which his father had thought him, throughout his life. He also had a deep love for flying. He moved from Phoenix to Prescott Valley in 1997. Lloyd still drove trucks for a total of 60 years before hanging up his keys but never stopped playing his music for the duration of this life. Besides being a member of the musicians union in Phoenix Lloyd became a member and vice president of the Greater Arizona Country and Western Swing Music Association for a time. He was inducted into the GACWSMA hall of fame in 2011. Lloyd was a consummate musician loved and respected by many friends and musicians alike. Toward the end of his life Lloyd was a lead guitarist for the Prescott Opry Band that plays monthly at the Elks Opera House on Gurley Street in Prescott. He will be missed dearly by all those who loved him, his family especially. Lloyd is survived by his life partner and loving wife Melva, daughter Shirley Diane, sons David Wayne (Sylvia Vanessa) Michael Lloyd, Robert Eugene, 16 grand children, 33 great grandchildren, and 1 great ,great-granddaughter. Lloyd and Melva were a very important part of raising 2 of their grand children, Michael David Anthony and Andrea Rose (father David). He is survived also by one brother Donald Lee Self of Phoenix. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents Clarence Edward and Rose Lee Self, brother Marvin Leon Self, and granddaughter Shannon Desiree Self. The family wishes to thank all the many prayers and love shined down upon us in this difficult period. God bless all of you, also to the Good Samaritan Society and Prescott Hospice for all of their love, support and guidance. We will love you and miss you forever and a day, Daddy. We will see you when we get home.
