'Her Smile and Southern Drawl were Loved by all'
A most beautiful lady with a captivating Southern accent has been called by our Heavenly Father to make Heaven a little brighter and a lot more cheerful. Jean Ellen McMichael Messick, wife of Thomas Roger Messick and mother of Victor Warren Messick and Ruth Michael Messick-Wardell, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 22, 2024. Jean's passing followed an extended period of declining health.
Born November 18, 1932, she was the youngest daughter of Doctor Victor Hugh and Ruth Frasier McMichael. Raised in Macon, Georgia, Jean graduated from A.L. Miller High School and attendee Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Later, she earned her degree in Education at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. It was at UK that she and Roger first met, fell in love, married, and had 67 wonderful years together.
Jean was a true and proper southern lady who achieved many distinctions throughout her life. She was a member of the Junior League of Macon; Tri-Delta Sorority at UK; and a sister in the Prescott EG Chapter of PEO, where she also served as Chapter President. Jean was thoughtful, kind, and considerate, but most of all she was the best mother, wife, and dearest friend anyone could have. A woman of compassion, empathy, and sincerity she was the person people turned to when troubled or just needing to talk.
As an experienced teacher, Jean taught 5th grade in Columbus, Georgia while Roger served his second tour in Vietnam. Throughout Roger's 28 years of Army service, she was the epitome of a military wife. In Columbus she was a Cub Scout Den mother and a Girl Scout Leader. Later, in Williamstown, Massachusetts she served as the first director of the Williamstown Friendship Center where she was dearly loved by all her senior citizens. She also served as coordinator for the town's 'Meals on Wheels' program.
Being a cradle Episcopalian, she was continuously active in church affairs regardless of where she lived. At St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown, she served two terms as a Vestry board member. For eleven years in Prescott, she was a dedicated team member of St. Luke's Alter Guild. She loved the Episcopal Church and never hesitated to volunteer even when her health was declining.
Jean is survived by her husband Roger; her son Victor Warren of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; her daughter Ruth Michael of Cave Creek, AZ; and her sister Eleanor Ruth McMichael, also of Prescott, AZ.
A memorial service celebrating Jean's life will take place at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 11 AM. A reception lunch will follow Jean's service in the St. Luke's Parish Hall where family and friends are invited.
Jean's family requests that any donations to her memory be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Prescott, Arizona.
Jean will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
