James John Marcel

James (Jim) Marcel, 76 October 28, 2024

James "Jim" Marcel, age 76, unexpectedly passed away on October 28, 2024. Born in Flushing, NY, Jim was one of five children. His family moved to Pennsylvania right after his birth for two years, before returning to Flushing. He and his father enjoyed raising Beagles for field trials, winning numerous trophies along the way. Jim had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid hunter, though he always said he enjoyed the peace and solitude of the woods more than the actual hunt. He bagged only one deer in his life but cherished his time in nature.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1972. After his discharge, he returned to his former job at Buck Consultants, an actuarial firm, where he met Barbara, the woman he eventually married. Jim later opened a bicycle shop, then pursued a degree in electronics, leading to a long career at Lockheed Electronics Co, where he worked until retiring in 1998.

In 2000, after Barbara retired, they moved to Prescott. There, Jim’s passion for the outdoors continued. He became known for his rock collection, earning the nickname "Rocky" for the large stones he gathered, some weighing up to 200 pounds, which he used to build staircases leading down to a seasonal creek on their property. Jim was a proud member and hike leader for the Prescott Outings Club and the Prescott Hiking Club. In 2008, Jim and Barbara joined the Arizona Site Steward Program, a volunteer initiative dedicated to protecting and preserving Arizona's rich archaeological and historical heritage, where Jim contributed 863 hours to help preserve local history. He believed in helping out a friend and lending a hand, a tool or his expertise whenever needed.

Jim and Barbara shared a deep love for travel, exploring the vast beauty of the United States by visiting countless national and state parks whenever time allowed. After retiring, their adventures expanded across the Atlantic to Europe, with a particular fondness for the charm and culture of Italy.

Jim will be remembered for his quiet devotion to family, his love for the outdoors, and his many contributions to his community. Jim was predeceased by his parents and brothers John, Harold, and Bill. He is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 48 years, his sister Rosemary Miller, and sister-in-law Jean Marcel.
