James 'Jim' R. Pickering

James Jim Robert Pickering, 89, passed away November 10, 2010 at Good Samaritan Society, Marley House Hospice, in Prescott, AZ. Jim was born April 21, 1921 in St Louis Mo. to James Robert Pickering and Rose Mackin Pickering. He served as Quartermaster in the Navy in WWII and was on a P.T. Boat in the Korean War.
After service to his country, he lived in St. Louis, Mo. where he began raising his family. He was involved with his church and Boys Scouts as Assistant Scout Master. After moving to Naperville, Ill., he was also involved in his church, serving on the council.


In 1975, Jim moved his family to Scottsdale, Arizona. He later retired with his wife to Prescott, AZ, where he was involved in many activities. He was a volunteer driver for 14 years for Meals on Wheels, and also, Adopt a Highway, organizing the Litter Lifters. Jim was a lifetime member of the Yavapai County Executive Board. He served 20 years of active work in various capacities, as well as Chairman of Yavapai County Fair for 4 years.


His hobbies were many, and included collecting coins, stamps, and shells. He also collected fossils and was a member of the ESCONI Club, an Earth and Science Club of Northern Illinois. He also learned to square dance and play the guitar.


Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lorraine, daughters Mary Harrington, Nancy Steele & Patty Sawottke & a son Steven Pickering. He also had 4 grandchildren, Brenda Buck, Janelle Watts, Michael & Jamie Steele & a great grandson, Aiden Watts.


Jim was a loving father and husband. He was a man with a sense of humor who was loved by all and will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
