Hewson Lawrence

Hewson Lawrence, age 84, died December 20, 2004, at his home in Prescott.  He was born in New York City on February 4, 1920, to John J. and Edith (Bond) Lawrence.  In 1923, they moved to Pasadena, California, where he grew up.   After graduating from Flintridge Preparatory School in 1939, he attended the University of Southern California where he received a degree in mechanical engineering.  He then joined the Army Air Corps and was sent to the California Institute of Technology to obtain his Master of Science degree in meteorology.  He was stationed in the China-Burma-India Theater where he served until the end of the war, predicting weather for the pilots.   After the war, he worked for Aerojet Engineering Corp. in Azusa, California, where he participated in programs such as the Titan Missile Project.  In 1968, he went to Washington, D.C. to work for the Dept. of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as a physical scientist.  Upon retirement in 1983, he and his wife Anne moved to Prescott.   In Prescott, Hewson belonged to the Antique Auto Club.  He and his wife won the first Arizona Governor?s Cup Rally with their 1955 Thunderbird, which ran from Prescott to the Grand Canyon.  He was a long-time member of the Evening Lions.  Hewson was an avid tennis player at the Prescott Racquet Club and participated in several Senior Olympics.  For the past ten years, he was an enthusiastic member of the Central Arizona Model Railroad Club.  He always said he was born too late to be a railroad engineer but would have loved that occupation.   Hewson is survived by his loving wife, Anne, whom he married in 1973; daughters Lorraine Lawrence of San Diego, California, Gale Lawrence of Irvine, California, Marcee (Dan) Camenson of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and a stepdaughter, Teri Lawrence of Portland, Oregon.  He is also survived by five grandchildren, a brother, Mac Lawrence of Palo Alto, California, and a sister, Donna Demetriades of Bozeman, Montana.  At his request, there will be no services.  A private family memorial will be held later.  Memorial contributions may be made to YRMC Hospice, 3262 Windsong Dr, Prescott Valley, AZ  86314.
