Henry died Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Northern Arizona V.A. Medical Center in Prescott, AZ. He was born August 14, 1922 in Roodhouse, IL; the son of Hamilton and Cindora (Cummins) Garner. Henry was 88 years old.
Henry served his country in the United States Army Air Corps, was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the battle of Guadalcanal. He was awarded the air medal for meritorious achievement in the South Pacific. Henry's citation was for exceptionally meritorious service on September 25, 1942 in an attack on a vastly superior enemy force. Henry and other crew members of the crew of their B-17 sighted fifteen enemy ships in the mouth of Tonolei Harbour, managed to make a bombing run on a heavy cruiser in spite of fire from fifteen attacking planes and scored a direct hit on the cruiser, downed two planes and did probable damage to another.
He later married the love of his life, Ina Smith, on April 17, 1945. Henry worked as a mechanic in the transportation field. He and Ina have lived in Arizona for almost 40 years and Henry was a member of the Masons.
Henry is survived by his wife, Ina, children; Cindy (Robert) Walters of Prescott, AZ, John M. (Rosemary) Garner of Odenton, MD, Jodi (Kenneth) Welch of Mesa, AZ, grandchildren; Anjanette, Shane, Kelly, Henry, Seth, great-grandchildren; Ava, Tyson, and sister; Ernesta Mira.
Henry was preceded in death by his sister Elva Malone, brothers Robert Garner, Louis Garner and Haskell Garner.

Service:
A military service with honors will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Prescott National Cemetery in Prescott.
