Harry James Dean

Harry James “Jim” Dean went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on July 31, 2012. He was 70 years old. Jim Dean was born on February 23, 1942, in Carmel, Indiana. He graduated from Carmel High School in 1960 and attended Manchester College to play football with his brother, Jack. He married Sherrie (Dill) Dean on October 4, 1964. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Jim graduated from Manchester College in 1968 with a degree in education. Jim began teaching and coaching at Hanover Central High School and later moved to Thorntown High School prior to moving his family to Phoenix, Arizona in 1974. In Arizona, he taught and coached football at Arcadia High School before accepting a teaching and football coaching position at Scottsdale Christian Academy, where his team won the state championship in 1983. In 1988, he left SCA and moved to Dewey where he accepted the position of Vice Principal and Athletic Director at Bradshaw Mountain High School. Later he became Principal at Bradshaw Mountain Middle School, the first Principal at Glassford Hills Middle School and finally at Mayer High School where he retired. He has been honored as Arizona’s Athletic Director of the Year, AIAAA Athletic Director of the Year and recently by the Arizona Republic as one of Arizona’s top high school football coaches of all time. He was an active member of the Lion’s Club and Humboldt Bible Church. Jim was preceded in death by his father, John Lester Dean; mother, Kathryn Luella Dean; and grandson, James Emmanuel Dean. He is survived in death by his brother Jack Dean (wife Judy); sister Mary Lou Imes; wife Sherrie (Dill) Dean; son Jim Dean (wife Lea); daughters Jamie Nelson (husband Jeff), Angela Conners (husband Kevin), Stacie Brown (husband Shontae); grandchildren, Brandy, Bubba (wife Brittany), Kaitlyn (husband Michael), Colton, Jake, Josh, Tashon, Brian, Stacion; and great grandkids, Aubree, MJ, Karlie and Adam.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Humboldt Bible Church, 2500 S. Old Black Canyon Hwy, Humboldt, AZ 86329 at 3:00PM. Donations can be made to Humboldt Bible Church.
