Grace 'Gracie' J. Endicott

Gracie died December 11, 2013 at Peaceful Valley Care Center in Williamson Valley. She was born in Dawt, Missouri on August 23, 1916. She was the daughter of Samuel A. and Martha D. (Hodgson) James. She was 97 years old. Gracie grew up on the family farm, where she cared for the sickly animals and worked in the garden and fields. She married when she was 20, had a daughter and divorced. She packed one suitcase gathered Peggy in her arms and headed for Arizona in 1940, hoping to find work. She was a waitress, cook and seamstress. Gracie worked at the PX Luke Air Force Base, during the war. Gracie moved from Glendale in 1987 to be with her daughter and son-in-law. She joined the United Methodist Church. She could play the harmonica and guitar when the mood struck her. Her hobby was making hand stitched quilts which she designed herself, giving most of them away. She continued to quilt until failing eyesight stopped her in her 93rd year. Gracie’s home always had several beloved cats. Her life was all work and very little play. She didn’t have time for it. Gracie never forgot to say “Thank you.” She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Russell of Prescott, AZ; sister Clarice Hein of Phoenix, AZ; and brother Mack (Frances) James of Mt. Vernon, MO. Gracie was preceded in death by her brothers Owen, Othel, Clinton, Clifford and Vanton; and sisters Elphy Lewis and Jewell Griffin; and son-in-law Keith Russell.
