Doris H. Smith

Doris Hilliard Smith, age 109, died on Monday; December 7, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society, Prescott Village in Prescott, AZ.
She was born March 9, 1911 in Somerville, MA, the daughter of Edward Knight Hilliard and Elsie (Davenport) Hilliard. She was baptized as a child and confirmed in the Episcopal Church. Doris grew up in New England and after high school was graduated in 1932 from the Boston School of Occupational Therapy. She worked in the field for several years while she lived in Concord, MA.
In the summer of 1950, she met Carroll Davis Smith in Peoria, IL. They were married in Concord on December 25th of that year and moved to Peoria, IL, where Mr. Smith was a partner in the family
business, E.M. Smith & Co., Inc. which was founded in 1894. The business was in the manufacture of tools and dies, maintenance and repair of machinery. In Peoria, she met Carroll's daughter Frances, her
husband Harry and their children, two years old and two months old.
Doris and Carroll moved to the country in 1957 and were involved in a project caring for rare waterfowl.
Her husband retired in 1966 and they moved to Nantucket, MA, where they had visited for several years and had built a home. While there, they managed the summer branch of The Country Store located in
Concord. Doris and Carroll then organized and planned for the visits of the American Red Cross blood drive, which regularly came from Boston.  Doris was director of volunteers for the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. She became an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Nantucket Garden Club. In June 1970, she joined Daughters of the American Revolution and enjoyed researching her genealogy. The immigrant ancestors of both sides of her family came to America from England in the 1630's. In 1981, family interests led to a move to
Arizona. She and Carroll built a home in Prescott where she became a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Yavapai Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. Together they enjoyed several
years as volunteers at Sharlot Hall Museum. When her husband died of a sudden stroke in 1991, three days after his 90th birthday, Doris moved on May 2, 1992 to her most recent home at Good Samaritan Society Prescott Village. There she continued to live an active life in her church, community and as a volunteer at the Samaritan care center. She loved to read, needlepoint, play bridge, entertain, attend Sunday symphony concerts and was a faithful friend too many with whom she enjoyed celebrating her milestone birthdays. Doris always had a dog; Annie, her little brown long coated Chihuahua, has been adopted by a friend.
In addition to her husband Carroll Smith, her stepdaughter Frances Schwarz, her sister Phyllis Hilliard Mosher, and sister Janis Hilliard Hollingshead all predeceased her in death.
Her survivors are granddaughter Pamela Millett of Peoria, IL; grandson H. Charles Schwarz of Asheville, North Carolina; great grandchildren Erin Schwarz Tiedt and Matthew Charles Schwarz both of Houston, Texas.; and niece Anne Mosher Shears.
