Dorathy Howell

Dorathy “Dottie” Howell was born August 28, 1939, in La Grande, Oregon, and passed away January 11, 2019, in Prescott, Arizona.

The daughter of Everett and Erma Hyde, Dottie grew up in La Grande, and attended Eastern Oregon University there. Airline stewardess school drew her to the Los Angeles area, where she met and married Richard Howell. After raising their son and daughter in Southern California, the couple lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico before retiring in Prescott, Arizona, 25 years ago.

The young Howell family enjoyed camping and off-road motorcycling. The couple made their home a gathering place for holidays and special occasions. A warm welcome and Dottie’s delicious meals added to the many wonderful memories of family and friends. Quiet, thoughtful and observant, Dottie could always find the perfect way to help others.

Dottie had a great love for children. She provided home daycare and early childhood education for dozens of infants and preschoolers over many years in Chatsworth, California. Many of the children kept in touch with her for years after leaving her care. This calling of her heart was cut short 39 years ago by a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

After retirement, Dottie took up quilting. She had a beautiful project in progress just as long as her eyes and fingers would allow. With the loving support of her husband, Richard, she held to a normal home routine for as long as possible. Nursing home care became necessary five years ago. Through it all, her faith and courage never failed.

Dottie is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard Howell; one son and daughter-in-law, one sister, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law; one grandson, several cousins, and three generations of nieces and nephews. Dottie was predeceased by the couple’s daughter, Pamela Howell.
