Donald Edward Groulik was born on April 11, 1934 in David City, NE to Edward and Irene (Wacha) Groulik. He attended grade school in David City until the family moved to Schuyler, where Don graduated from Schuyler High School in 1952 and enjoyed participating in football, basketball, and track & field. After high school, Don attended Wayne State College and continued competing in sports. That is also where he met his future wife Jo Lightner. Don’s career with Goodyear Tire took the family to Mitchell, SD and Battle Creek, NE. In 1962 they settled in Schuyler, and he soon joined Schuyler State Bank as a loan officer. He retired in 1996, then he and Jo moved to Arizona in 2011 to be closer to family.
In his spare time Don enjoyed golfing at the Schuyler Golf Club, and always looked forward to playing in league with his friends. He enjoyed watching and cheering on any sport associated with the Nebraska Huskers. He ushered regularly for Saturday evening Mass at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Don is survived by his children: Terri (Bill Harris) of Phoenix, AZ; Scot (Janet) Groulik of Seattle, WA; Max (Deb) Groulik of St. Louis, MO; Kim (Chris Butler) of Cleveland, OK; and Mona Clayton of Phoenix, AZ; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Jo Groulik on February 6, 2014; parents; and only sibling David “Fuzz” Groulik.
Memorials can be directed to the Benedictine Mission House at 1123 Rd. I, Schuyler, NE 68661.
