Darrell Eugene Volkman, 81, passed peacefully to the everlasting at his home in Cottonwood, Arizona on November 6, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife Elma Ruth Volkman on October 20, 2011. Darrell is survived by brother, Jerry W. Volkman (wife, Sharon), children Ronald (partner, Tom Hartman), Gary, Gayle (husband, Steve Palmer), and Steven (wife, Kelly), ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Born March 2, 1930 to Wesley and Josephine Volkman in Herington, Kansas, he graduated from Herington High School in 1947. In 1950 he married Elma Ruth Klaassen. They moved to Wichita, Kansas where they raised their four children. Darrell worked in watch making and then was hired by Sperry Flight Systems in 1954. Sperry transferred Darrell to their new facility and the family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1967. After 39 years in Sperry-Aerospace Systems Manufacturing, Darrell retired. He and Elma moved to Peeples Valley, Arizona in 1986. They moved to Cottonwood, Arizona in 2006.
Darrell was a busy, hard-working husband and father and took on many volunteer jobs in the Lutheran School in Wichita (school bus fleet manager, baseball coach, building committee) and Zion Lutheran Church. HH G He He played in church semi-professional softball league for years. He was a very active parent-leader in Boy Scouts. In both Kansas and Arizona his favorite pastime was hunting and fishing. In retirement he took on a new hobby of rock hound and polishing. He served on the Yavapai County Planning and Zoning Commission from 1992-1998. He helped organize the new Peeples Valley Fire Department. Darrell was a Christian in word and deed and was an eager, serious worker who got the job done at both the Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church and Verde Valley Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood.
A memorial celebration for Darrell Volkman will be held December 8, 2011 at 11a.m. at Verde Valley Presbyterian Church, 1500 Hombre Drive, Cottonwood, Arizona. Donations in his memory may go to Old Town Mission or Verde Valley Presbyterian Church. The family was assisted by the Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Chapel in Prescott Valley, AZ.
