Bruce Arthur Johnson, 81 of Prescott, Arizona, moved on from his earthly life to be with the Lord on October 21, 2024. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Bruce loved his family and friends, serving others and his church community. Bruce’s story began on January 7, 1943 in Devils Lake, North Dakota to Arthur and Bertha Johnson, where he was the oldest of two boys. Bruce had a love of ice hockey, playing on his high school’s varsity team. Growing up, Bruce, his father and brother put in countless hours redoing an old bath house on Wood Lake and turning it into a cabin to live in during the summer months. His summers were spent with friends and family, playing card games, water skiing and fishing.
Bruce was known for his outgoing and friendly nature, warm hugs and love for nature, especially planting gardens. Despite being born with hearing loss in one ear, he never let it hold him back. Bruce was a proud graduate of Devils Lake High School, where he was valedictorian of his class, and the University of North Dakota, where he majored in Mathematics with a minor in Russian. After graduating from college, he moved to Florida for work before relocating to Connecticut, where he met and married Jeanne Johnson and raised his two daughters, Kristi and Sarah. Bruce shared with his children his love of spending time outside, playing games, being on the ice and enjoying life. Later, he married Janice Johnson, and raised his son Timothy and daughter Rebecca. He loved his time spent at church, where he sang in the choir and played his cello. He dedicated the majority of his career to Travelers Insurance in Hartford, Connecticut. Outside of work, he volunteered at Camp Woodstock and served on the board of directors for many years, deeply enjoying his role in that community.
In his later years, he found love again with his wife, Karen Johnson, and together they moved from Connecticut, leaving behind the cold winters, and built a life in Prescott, Arizona. In his retirement, Bruce loved spending time with family and traveling. He traveled to Connecticut, California, Colorado, and Texas often to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him and his warmth and kindness will live on in our hearts.
Bruce is lovingly remembered by his daughter Kristi (James) Green of Texas with grandson Joshua and granddaughters Haylie and Lana, his daughter Rebecca Rolando of Connecticut with grandson Jaden and granddaughters Lillian and Sadie, daughter Sarah (Ken) Overton of California with grandson Owen and granddaughters Olivia and Abigail, son Timothy (Michele) Johnson of Connecticut with granddaughters Addison and Avery, and stepdaughter Kristy (Dan) Miller of Colorado with granddaughter Katelyn and grandson Connor. He will also be missed by his brother Ross Johnson and sister in law Kathy Johnson along with his nieces and nephews and their families: Matt Johnson, Anne Krause, Keith Johnson, and Adam Johnson. He was predeceased by Karen Johnson, Janice Johnson, father Arthur Johnson, and mother Bertha Johnson.
A memorial service to celebrate Bruce’s life will be held on December 28th, 2024 at 11 AM at the American Lutheran Church of Prescott. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to YMCA Camp Woodstock or American Lutheran Church of Prescott.
