Born in Lublin, Poland in 1936 to Jacob and Helen Greenberg, Abe’s early life was greatly impacted by World War II. He survived the holocaust by remaining in hiding with his grandmother for nearly 5 years. In 1949, he set sail for the United States, making a home in Oklahoma City. After graduating from high school, Abe was granted an ROTC scholarship at the University of Oklahoma. Serving in the US Navy was one of Abe’s proudest achievements. He served on six ships, finally serving as Captain on the USS Schofield. He was the first, if not the only holocaust survivor to command a US Naval Warship. After retiring from the military in 1981, Abe went on to work for the Department of Energy in Richland, Washington. Upon retirement in 2002, he and his wife relocated to Prescott, Arizona. Abe enjoyed exploring the outdoors, telling stories, meeting new people and being part of the community here. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Linda Greenberg, his three children, Melissa Greenberg Nicoletti of New York City, Joshua Greenberg of Maui and Peter Greenberg of Seattle. He also leaves behind two adoring dogs and countless cherished friends.
