Phyllis Marlene Newlove was born on March 17, 1936, (St. Patrick’s Day) in Ashland, Kentucky, to the parents of Wayne I. Newlove and Mazie Fern Lykins. Because her father was employed by the federal Government Veteran’s Hospitals, the family moved several times in Phyllis’s early childhood living among places such as Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Walla Walla, Washington. It was there in Walla Walla, at age 11 years, Phyllis responded to an “alter call” in the Nazarene Church, asking God to come into her heart.
In 1952, her father was transferred to the Veteran’s Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut, and attended the Nazarene Church in New Haven and it was there in early 1952 that Stan Sides, then at age 17, and Phyllis age 16, met in the Nazarene Church, attended Sunday School and went together until they were married in the Nazarene Church, on June 29, 1957. During their long and happy marriage the lord blessed them with three children; Darla Gay, Robert Wayne, and Stephanie Jean ( who was born in Weisbaden, West Germany). Stan retired from active military service after 20 years, and settled in Scottsdale, Arizona until Phyllis and Stan moved to Prescott, in January 2001, where they have lived until Phyllis’s passing on Friday January 18, 2019.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Stan of 62 ½ years, her eldest daughter Darla Gay(Sides) Backman of Chandler, Arizona, and her younger brother Gary Newlove and family of Naugatuck, Connecticut.
